Meaford Ontario Visited
by Gary McWilliams (aka Festival Nomad)
The Town of Meaford, located on the shores of Georgian Bay is an “amazing” community!
Meaford offers so much for both visitors and residents.
Come into Meaford in the fall and you’ll think that the town has been invaded by “Scarecrows“! If you think that, you’d be right! The annual Scarecrow Invasion is in “full” swing!
Driving into Meaford from Collingwood or Thornbury, is like driving into most rural towns.
There are lots of fun shops to explore and great restaurants to discover.
These help define the community, but are not its “heart“.
As you travel west on the main street you’ll see a large building on your right.
When I first saw this building, I thought that it the the town hall.
But I was wrong. It’s actually the Meaford Hall, the Arts and Culture Centre of Meaford and, perhaps the region.
It’s actually part of the “heart” that I mentioned before!
At any given time the Hall offers concerts, plays, art exhibits and more!
If you turn right from the “main drag” onto one of the downtown side streets, you’ll find Meaford Harbour and Georgian Bay.
The town’s harbour offers boaters a great marina, visitors and residents fun parkland and for market lovers, a Farmers’ Market open June to Thanksgiving.
Also on the Meaford Harbour is the Meaford Museum. It contains lots of interesting information about Meaford’s unique past!
The Meaford Harbour and Georgian Bay are another part of Meaford’s “heart“!
The third part of Meaford’s “heart” are their parks. There are 2 that we often visit, Beautiful Joe Park and Meaford Memorial Park.
I must be honest with you, Judi’s and my favourite “go to” park is the Memorial Park.
Memorial Park is located right on the shores of Georgian Bay.
If you visit the park in the spring you will find thousands of “trilliums“, white, red and pink!
The park offers so much, play area, picnic tables, campsites and more!
In the Fall there’s the Scarecrow Invasion and the Meaford Fall Fair.
In the winter there’s curling at the Meaford Curling Club and skating at the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre.
And, if you like watching “live” hockey, there are the Meaford Knights, a Jr A Hockey Club.
Like i said at the beginning of this article, Meaford is an amazing community, to visit, live and play in!
